Roland L. Smith
WHS Class of 1955

SMITH, ROLAND L..Jr.age 74, departed on his final voyage  April 14, 2010, from his residence in Lyme, NH.  Roland and his wife have been residents of Lyme for the past 30 years. 

 

Roland was born and raised in East Lake, Alabama, a l951 graduate of Robinson Grammar School, Woodlawn High School graduate, class of l955 and l959 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.  Roland served as a Naval Officer prior to his Merchant Marine career.  He was the youngest captain in the peace time Merchant Marine and was licensed to captain 'any ship of any gross tonnage on any ocean.'  He was a great and loyal friend to all who knew and worked with him.  He had an upbeat attitude on life until the very end.

 

Roland and his family were long time members of East Lake Methodist Church.   He is preceded in death by his parents, Roland L and Claude Smith.  He is survived by Letitia  (Tish) Brock Smith (nee Oden) his wife of 48 years, his brother in law Terry Oden and his wife Sandra, his nieces  Letitia Christie Oden of Birmingham and Mary Montgomery Elliott (Mrs. Timothy) of Ashburn, Va. and her beloved children, Jacob, Keaghan and Zachary Elliott.

 

A memorial service will be held at the Thetford Baptist Church, East Thetford, Vt., at 2:00PM on April 28, 2010.
